Hedge
Jean Royle created this original Christmas card design in the 1970s. ‘Hedge’ is a snowy winter landscape measuring 5″ x 3½” which Jean developed from original sketches. She then further experimented with the idea by using white ink on black paper thus creating the impression of a snowy landscape. The pattern qualities within this pleached hedge fascinated her. Depth and contrast are created by the furrows of the ploughed field drawing the eye to the distance beyond the hill, and the wintry sky. A preliminary sketch in pencil taken from her sketchbook is shown below in which her notations record elder as the species which forms the hedge, and birch as one of the stakes.
